During the Edo period, Enoshima was a popular tourist destination for many Edokko
(Tokyoites).
As shown in this illustration, in those days there was no bridge,
and instead people could enter the island by boat or by sea directly at low tide.
Here, pea-sized travelers are all heading towards the island,
as if they had been waiting for the tide to go out.
Hokusai has meticulously depicted the rows of houses lining the approach to the island,
with a pagoda peeking out from behind them.
The sea around the island is calm without a single wave,
and the white dots of moss on the water's surface reflect the sunlight in a beautiful way.
In the series, this is an illustration that stands out for its detailed depiction.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
