(Sazai hall - Temple of Five Hundred Rakan) 五百らかん寺さゞゐ堂
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Rakanji was an Obaku sect Zen temple located in Honjo Oshimamura,
boasting vast grounds and buildings, but has since relocated to Meguro Ward.
Among the buildings on the temple grounds was the conch-shaped Sazaido
(known as the Sazaido, but officially known as the Sansodo),
built in 1741 (the first year of the Kanpo era).
It is said that the three-story high building was renowned for its excellent views.
The painting is thought to depict the top floor,
showing a man and woman enjoying the view, and it is interesting
that most of the painting is portrayed facing away from the viewer.
It seems likely that this was also Hokusai's aim.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
