As the title "Old Map" indicates, this painting no longer existed by Hokusai's time
and was drawn from his imagination.
It is described in the "Tales of Ise" as a famous spot for iris flowers,
but the figures are depicted in the manners and customs of the time,
creating an unusual composition to Hokusai's liking.

by Tokyo traditional woodcut craft Association
These traditional woodblock prints were reproduced exactly as the first edition
at Edo-Tokyo Museum have by many of top skilled craftsmen
like a dream team in Japan.
